Is there ever a good time to declutter the
basement? Well, the only real good time to really get in there and declutter it, rather than shutting the door and ignoring it, is when you want to renovate. If you've got big plans for your basement space and you're ready to make some serious value on your home, then you need to think about decluttering before you do anything else.
The basement is often used as a junk space, full of boxes, spiders and unfinished projects that have been stashed there over the years. You need to start looking at decluttering the space so that you have more than enough room for
pest control, for building something new, and even for adding new Windows to allow some ventilation down there. If you're planning to make your basement a space that you include in your home as a living space, then decluttering is going to help you to start up. With that in mind, let's take a look at some top tips for decluttering your basement.
Tip #1
Do a little at a time. To organize your entire basement can be pretty overwhelming, but if you try to tackle it in smaller bite size chunks it will be easier to make the process more smooth. So give yourself 15 to 20 minutes per day to do some decluttering and set an alarm. Once that alarm goes off, stop where you are and pick up there again tomorrow. This will allow you to either feel motivated to carry on or happy that you at least completed 20 minutes of decluttering.
Tip #2
Have a plan first. Like trying to tackle the entire basement at once, not having a plan in place can really add some stress. You need to deal with the clutter as you find it, so work through the basement from the starting point and go left to right. This is especially important if your basement is pretty crowded.
Tip #3
Make sure that you have a sorting area. Decluttering your basement is one thing, but what are you going to do with everything As you come across them? You need to think about how you organize everything, but that's not easy to do when you're standing among a mess. Make sure you have an area of the basement or even outside in the hall where you would put all of the things that you're hoping to keep and a pile for the things that you're trying to put for donations. Once you have a staging area for all of this clutter, it will become much easier to categorize everything.
Tip #4
Designate your zones. If you want to
keep your basement organized for the long haul, make sure that you have a storage space that's divided into seasons. For example, the winter season may see your Christmas decorations. The summer season may see your BBQ or your grill. It's important to do this just so you can keep your basement looking tidy for longer.
