Strawberry Knot Bag · Free Crochet Pattern

Ready to crochet a cute and nifty bag with a touch of whimsy?

LINKS

The Strawberry Knot Bag is a striped pouch with a cute strawberry and flower charm, which doubles up as a bookmark or car rearview mirror hanging ornament. This pattern is very relaxing to make as it is designed with an easy and repetitive stitch.

Construction

The bag is made completely in one piece, requiring sewing only for one end of the straps. The charm is also low-sew, requiring only one point of attachment.

Add an optional cloth lining in the bag and underside of the straps for durability.

Yarn

This bag is designed using 24/7 Cotton Yarn, which is a 100% cotton yarn that has a light sheen and comes in many shades! It's very sturdy and durable, and doesn't stretch out of shape like acrylic or other fibers do.

Use 100% cotton yarn to minimize stretching.

I had lots of leftover yarn (pictured below with a full skein to the right for comparison) in all colors after finishing the entire bag, so you can safely use the different colors in a flexible range of combinations:

Gifting

This pouch is perfect for kids, adults, teachers, friends, parents, and more!  It’s a great Mother’s Day gift, birthday gift, Teacher Appreciation gift, Christmas holiday gift, and craft fair product.

If you enjoy the look of knot bags, you might like a couple others that I've designed! Check out the Mosu Bag and the Botanical Japanese Knot Bag, both free patterns on my blog.

BASE & BODY OF BAG

Notes:
  • Switch colors as desired, or follow the ‘Color Guide’ above.
  • Finish each round from R1-R9 by joining with a sl st to the first dc (or sc).
  • Work in continuous rounds from R10-R42.

R1: In a MR, ch 2 and insert 12 dc. Tighten the ring. Join with a sl st to the first dc. (12)

R2: Ch 2, dc-inc around. Join. (24)

R3: Ch 2, (dc, dc-inc) x 12. Join. (36)

R4: Ch 2, (dc 2, dc-inc) x 12. Join. (48)

R5: Ch 2, (dc 3, dc-inc) x 12. Join. (60)

R6: Ch 2, (dc 4, dc-inc) x 12. Join. (72)

R7: Ch 2, (dc 5, dc-inc) x 12. Join. (84)

R8: Ch 2, (dc 6, dc-inc) x 12. Join. (96)

R9: Ch 2, (dc 7, dc-inc) x 12. Join. (108)

We will now work in continuous rounds. Place a stitch marker at the start of each round to keep track.

R10: Sc around. (108)

R11: (Sc, ch, sk a st) around. Join. (54 sc, 54 ch)

R12: Sc in the first sc of the previous round. Ch. (Insert a sc in the ch-gap, ch) around. (55 sc, 55 ch)

R13: (Sc in the ch-gap, ch) around. (55 sc, 55 ch)

R14-R42: Repeat R13.

At this point, the bag measures approximately 10” from R1 to R42. If desired, add additional rounds for a longer bag.

Sc in the next ch-gap. Without FO, continue with instructions for the straps.

STRAPS

Note: The straps are worked in turned rows.

Strap #1 (shorter):

R1: (Sc in the ch-gap, ch) x 7. Sc in the next ch-gap. (8 sc, 7ch)

R2: Ch 2, turn. (Sc in ch-gap, ch) x 7. Sc in the last st. (8 sc)

R3: Ch 2, turn. (Sc in ch-gap, ch) x 7. Sc in the ch2-gap. (8 sc)

R4-R17: Repeat R3.

FO with a long tail for sewing later.

Strap #2 (longer):

Flatten the bag against a flat surface. With Strap #1 on the right side, count 11 ch-gaps to the left. Attach yarn to the 12th ch-gap.

R1: Ch+sc in the same ch-gap. (Ch, sc in ch-gap) x 7. (8 sc)

R2: Ch 2, turn. (Sc in ch-gap, ch) x 7. Sc in the last st. (8 sc)

R3: Ch 2, turn. (Sc in ch-gap, ch) x 7. Sc in the ch-2 gap.

R4-R55: Repeat R3.

FO with a long tail for sewing later.

Strawberry Ornament

The Strawberry Ornament is made using my free Strawberry Bookmark pattern

FINISHING

  1. Lay the bag flat. Fold the long and short straps in half, so that the ends can be sewn to the other side of the bag.
  2. Add the strawberry charm (pattern on next page) by folding the stem in half, looping it around the shorter strap, and pulling the strawberry and flower through the loop.
  3. If desired, you may add a cloth lining inside the bag and to the underside of the straps to provide more support and durability.
