My original free Granny Square Chicken pattern has been a big hit! It was the first of its kind, published in October 2023, and pretty soon I saw more versions of my granny square chicken popping up around the web. I guess the idea of putting two granny squares together to make this chicken is a well-received one. Inspired to make more, I designed a chicken using plush yarn this time (though you can use other types of yarn as well), and the granny square version is a lot simpler for beginners to tackle! Let's check it out!
The Granny Square Chicken is a colorful hen crocheted using two floral granny squares. It will add some rustic, farmhouse charm to your life! This versatile pattern allows for endless yarn color combinations, and can be crocheted using yarn scraps so it’s quite suitable as a stashbuster project.

Granny Square
The granny square pattern I used is the Merry-Go-Round Granny Square. It's a very easy, beginner-friendly square because it uses only two stitches: single crochet and chain!
Uses
There are many ways to make use of this pattern, such as:
- Keychain: add a keyring
- Ornament: add a hanging loop
- Pin cushion: just stick in your pins to have it serve as a pincushion
- Home decor: set it on your office desk, to add a rustic touch in your dining or living room, etc.
- Gift: for family and friends
- Scent Sachet: stuff it with a satchel of lavender (or your favorite scent) to make it into a soothing diffuser for your car, office, or room
- Craft fair product: sell it at markets; it's the perfect market prep pattern to work up because it's quick, easy, and will surely grab attention!
Yarn
I designed this plush chicken using velvet chenille yarn and a 5mm hook, and it has resulted in a very squishy and soft chicken! My recommended plush yarns would be Hobbii yarn (Honey Bunny, Toucan, or Baby Snuggle).
Of course, you can also try thinner yarns or other types of fibers to create a different look. In the photo below, the smallest chicken to the very right was crocheted using Hobbii Friends Cotton 8/8 yarn and a 2.75mm hook. It was crocheted usign the exact same pattern and stitches as the middle chicken, which are both the "small size" in the pattern. The "big size" chicken is to the very left.

Crochet Instructions
Note: The free version of this pattern (below) shows instructions for the SMALL chicken only, and does not include any photo references. For the BIG chicken instructions and some step-by-step photos, please refer to the PDF pattern.
Step 1: Make the Granny Squares
Crochet R1-R5 of the Merry-Go-Round Granny Square (free pattern). Make two squares.
Step 2: Join the Squares
First, place the wrong sides of the two squares together. Use a yarn needle and long piece of yarn to sew three sides together, leaving the fourth side open.
Step 3: Crochet the Chicken's Comb
This comb takes up 3 sts of space.
Have the opening of the square facing right. Starting from the upper-left corner, count 3 sts to the right. Attach pink yarn.
(Ch, dc, ch, sl st in the same st) x 3. FO and weave in the ends.

(Ch, dc, ch, sl st in the same st) x 3. FO and weave in the ends.
Step 4: Crochet the Chicken's Beak
This beak takes up 1 st of space.Attach yellow yarn one st after the comb. Ch+sc in the same st. FO and weave in the ends.
Step 5: Finishing the Body
Attach plastic safety eyes near the corner where the comb and beak are, in the second-to-last round. I used 12mm for the small chicken, and 14mm for the big chicken.Stuff the chicken with fiberfill stuffing.
Then, squeeze the opening of the body flat so that the top corner touches the bottom corner. This creates a pyramid / triangular shape. Together, those corners become the center of the chicken’s butt (where the tail goes). Use yarn and a yarn needle to sew across this final edge. FO and weave in the ends.
Step 6: Crochet the Chicken's Tail
This tail takes up 3 sts of space. Attach green yarn to a st next to the center of the bottom. The bottom is the last edge you just sewed shut. (Ch 2, dc, ch 2, sl st in the same st) x 3. FO with a yarn tail and weave in the ends.
Congratulations on finishing!
