Kitchen Hand Towel (Free Crochet Pattern)

Dear fellow crocheters,

I'm super excited to share with you my new design, the Kitchen Hand Towel!  It's a quick and easy beginner-friendly crochet pattern.  With a buttoned strap, it can easily be hung on a rod in a kitchen or bathroom.

This hand towel is the perfect home décor project to make as a housewarming gift, thank you or appreciation gift, or birthday present.  It’s also great to make for selling at craft fairs!

Here are the measurements...

Height: 18 inches
Width: 13 inches

However, I must tell you that it can easily be customized!  The length of the towel or straps can be changed simply by adding or decreasing rows.

You can also customize this project by using different yarn color combinations or attaching a fancy button to create a unique look.

I do recommend using 100% cotton yarn so that it absorbs water and maintains its shape well.  The yarn I used was Bernat Handicrafter Cotton Twists in “Green Twists” and Lily Sugar ‘n Cream in “Sage Green."

~ CROCHET INSTRUCTIONS ~

Note (read before beginning):
This pattern begins from the bottom of the towel, ending with the top.  It is crocheted entirely in one piece, so fastening off occurs only at the very end when indicated.

Towel Bottom
Begin with the main towel color.
Ch 51.
R1: Dc in 4th ch from hook. (Beginning ch-3 counts as first dc.) (Dc 3, dec 2, dc 3, inc 2) x 3. Dc 3, dec 2, dc 3, inc in last st. (48 sts)
R2: Ch 1 (does not count as first sc), turn. Insert 2 sc in same st as the ch-1. (Sc 3, dec 2, sc 3, inc 2) x 3. Sc 3, dec 2, sc 3, inc in last st. (48 sts)
R3: Ch 3 (counts as first dc), turn. Insert a dc in same st as the ch-3. (Dc 3, dec 2, dc 3, inc 2) x 3. (Dc 3, dec 2, dc 3, inc in last st. (48 sts)
R4-R24: Repeat R2 for even rows, and R3 for odd rows.
Continue on with the ‘Towel Top.’

Towel Top
Switch to the towel topper color.
R25: Ch 1, turn. Insert a sc in same st as the ch-1. (Sc 3, hdc, dc 2, hdc, sc 3, sk next 2 sts) x 3. Sc 3, hdc, dc 2, hdc, sc 4. (42 sts)
Note: Continuing on, continue inserting the first sc in the same st as the beginning ch-1.
R26: Ch 1, turn. (Sc, dec) across. (28 sts)
R27: Ch 1, turn. (Sc, dec) across. (18 sts)
R28: Ch 1, turn. (Sc, dec) across. (12 sts)
R29: Ch 1, turn. (Sc, dec) across. (9 sts)
R30-R34: Ch 1, turn. Sc across. (9 sts)
R35: Ch 1, turn. (Sc, dec) across. (6 sts)
R36: Ch 1, turn. Sc 2, dec, sc 2. (5 sts)
R37-R46: Ch 1, turn. Sc across. (5 sts)
Note: If you’d like a longer strap, repeat R46 until you reached the desired length.  For a shorter strap, crochet fewer rows than R46.  Continue with the last two rows of this pattern to form the buttonhole.

Button Hole
R47: Ch 1, turn. Sc 2, ch 2, sk a st, sc 2.
R48: Ch 1, turn. Insert 5 dc into the ch-2 gap. Sl st into the last st. FO and weave in the ends.

~ FINISHING INSTRUCTIONS ~

  1. Attach yarn to the right side of the towel, where the color change began in R25.
  2. Sc around the entire ‘Towel Top’ edge for a tidy look, then FO and weave in the ends.
  3. Sew a wooden button to the top, and weave in the ends.
  4. Fold the buttonhole strap down to fasten it to the button.
Congratulations on finishing your Kitchen Hand Towel!

  2. When you decrease is it a DC decrease or a sc decrease?

    1. Hi! It depends on the row. If you're using dc in that row, you'll want to use a dc-dec. If you're using sc in that row, use a sc-dec. Hope this helps! :)

  3. May I know how many balls of yarn was used?
    Thanks,

  4. Do you do the increase in two of the DC in the last three dc. For some reason its not working out for me

    1. I am finding the same, I have determined to simply do 2x DC into the first stitch there and then increase again at the end. The math only works on the SC rows.

    2. We’re you able to get this right? I’m not able to get the first row to work. Thanks

    3. If I count up each of the stitches outlined for Row 1 of main colour, I come up with 38 yet the stitch count is supposed to be 48. Has anyone figured out what the extra 10 stitches should be? I can't make the first row work with the instructions as written in the pattern.

    4. Me either and I've been working on it for 3 days. If I ripped it out once I've ripped it out 20 times I just don't get it I thought it was me having a mental block of some kind. It should be simple, straightforward but it's not working. 46, 48, 47, 45 rarely 48.

    5. The first row is DC in 4th chain from hook. (The chain counts as a DC).
(Then DC in next 3 stitches, dc2tog, dc2tog, DC in next 3 stitches, inc, inc*) repeat from * 3 times, DC in next 3 stitches, dc2tog, dc2tog, DC in next 3 stitches, increase in last stitch. Hope this helps!

    6. The best way I’ve figured to fix this first row is the ch 50 instead of 51. Start in 4th ch from the hook (counts as first dc) 2 dc, then follow the sequence of *2 dec, 3 dc, 2 inc, 3 dc* and repeat until the end of the row. Your last 2 sts should be inc. you’ll have to alter the pattern as far as st count from there, but it shouldn’t be to difficult as long as you follow the patterns of stitch sequences for each row. Hope this helps!

  5. I’m trying to make this dish towel. I am having a hard time getting first row to come out correctly. Would love directions to be a little clearer. Thank you csrol

  6. That's a great article! The neatly organized content is good to see. Can I quote a blog and write it on bamboo skewer manufacturers? My blog has a variety of communities including these articles. Would you like to visit me later?

  8. There is nothing better than hand towels. but due to sweating these are less durable. So it is important to to use the most used fabric in clothing and textiles.

    1. Hi! I apologize but I did not keep yardage info when I was designing this pattern. My apologies! I would guess that it took 1 skein of the dark green and 1-2 skeins of the mixed green/white yarn (both are Lily Sugar n Cream).
