I designed this pattern for my baby girl Yumi, who had quickly grown out of her newborn bonnet! She needed a hat for the winter, as it gets pretty frigid here in the Pacific Northwest during this time of the year, and I was able to whip this one up very quickly. I didn't keep track of the time, but my estimate would be less than 2 hours from start to finish! Anyhow, I love how she looks in this little pixie bonnet and that it brings a pop of color and whimsy during the grey and cold winters here!
Yarn
The Any-Size Pixie Bonnet Crochet Pattern is incredibly versatile and adaptable to a wide range of yarns. Whether you prefer medium or bulky weight yarn, or even lighter or heavier options, this pattern can accommodate them all – as long as you match it with the appropriate hook size. It looks stunning in solid colors for a clean, classic look, but really comes to life with color-changing yarns like ombre or gradient styles. The flowing transitions of these yarns add depth and visual interest, enhancing the bonnet's fairytale charm. This flexibility allows you to create a unique piece every time, whether you're making a soft pastel bonnet for a newborn or a bold, rich-toned version for an adult. The ability to customize the yarn choice means you can make this bonnet to suit any style, season, or occasion!
For the sample project pictured here, I used Hobbii Coriandoli yarn, which is a bulky weight 5 yarn that works up quickly with a 7mm crochet hook!
If you're looking to make a pixie with medium weight yarn for a "finer" look, my recommendations would be:
- Lion Brand Heartland (the heathered hues are perfect for a more "woodland" and natural, rustic look)
- 24/7 Cotton Yarn (use this for beautiful, crisp stitch definition!)
- Brava Worsted (great yarn on a budget!)
- Caron Simply Soft (another great choice for yarn on a budget!)

BONNET
Note: This part is worked in turned rows with the same number of stitches each row.Start with a long yarn tail of at least 12 inches (to sew the back of the bonnet later).
R1: Ch 3, then fhdc until you reach the desired length. Make sure it goes around the wearer’s head in an upside-down U shape.
R2: Ch 2, turn. Hdc across in BLO.
R3 and onwards: repeat R2 until you reach the desired width for the hat.
Without FO, fold the rectangle in half with the short ends together. Using a yarn needle and the long starting yarn tail, sew across the stitches in R1, creating the seamed back of the bonnet.
STRAPS
- Make a long chain, noting the exact number so you can replicate it for the second strap later. Sl st into the 2nd ch from the hook. Then, sl st in each ch back towards the bonnet.
- Sc across the bottom edge of the bonnet until you reach the other end.
- For the second strap, make the same number of chains as the first. Then, sl st into the 2nd ch from the hook. Sl st in each ch back towards the bonnet.
- Without FO, continue with the front edging.
FRONT EDGING
- Sc in BLO across the last row of the bonnet.
- FO with a tail and weave in the ends.
